Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom ACA Surprise No Increase in Part-Time Employment

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom ACA Surprise No Increase in Part-Time Employment When the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, first passed, many speculated that there would be an increase in part-time employment. By reducing the work hours of existing full-time employees, or by increasing the number of part-time employees hired, employers could avoid ACA’s mandate that they must offer health insurance to all full-time employees. To briefly recap, the Affordable Care Act provision for employer shared responsibility required that starting January1, 2015, large firms (those with 100 or more full-time equivalent or FTE employees) must offer affordable health insurance to their full-time workers (people working 30 or more hours per week) or pay a penalty. Implementation of the mandate was postponed until 2016 for midsize companies (those with 50â€"99 FTE employees). Small firms (those with 49 or fewer FTE employees) are exempt from the mandate. Some experts were certain that within a few years of ACA passing, we’d find increases in employment just below the 30 hour threshold. They also guessed that the ACA, by expanding access to means-tested public and publicly subsidized coverage, would create work disincentives. Changes in incentives for part-time employment might be particularly strong in jobs where full-time employment confers eligibility for employer-sponsored insurance, given that this eligibility generally makes workers ineligible for subsidized Marketplace coverage. Caring For Elders With Dementia

Caring For Elders With Dementia Dementia triggers women more than men â€" Caregivers are also giving up their lives Dementia is not just the leading cause of majority of the deaths in the US, UK and Australia but this disease is even more likely to end up the lives of the caregivers of people suffering from dementia. The report provided by Alzheimer’s Research UK highlights the massive toll that dementia takes on the women in UK, US and Australia. This degenerative disease has not just become the key cause of death among women but they are also taking away the lives of those who provide care to such patients. Due to this, there are several who suffer from emotional and physical stress, while there are some others who even lose their job while providing care to people with dementia. Statistics reveal that there is a unique impact of dementia on women and at the same time, it is also seem that women carry the role of taking care of their near and dear ones who are suffering from this neurodegenerative disease. It is rather sad enough to note that later on they end up living with the condition themselves. This has to come to an end. Dementia among women More than 850,000 people within the UK suffer from dementia and 500,000 of them are women After the age of 65 years, the risk of developing dementia doubles every 2 years Women above the age of 60 years are 2 times more likely to suffer from dementia as much as they’re vulnerable to breast cancer 74% of the people who volunteer for further studies by joining the Join Dementia Research are all women as they look forward to spread the word Women are 3 times more likely to play the role of a caregiver. They prefer caring for people with dementia and they often opt for 24 hour care Women caregivers report that they feel more supported than their male counterparts 18% of the working women caregivers were penalized at their workplaces for some reason 20% of the caregivers who were primarily working women had to quit their job in order to start their job as caregiver Women caregivers are more vulnerable to feeling stressed-out, depressed and isolated. They are also more likely to end up with this disease themselves 40% of the researchers in UK and 38% of them in Australia are women as per reports from UNESCO 44% of Grant Review Board of Alzheimer’s Research US are women and this number has constantly kept doubling since 2-014 58% of applications for career grants to Alzheimer’s Research UK come from women but the number declines during the later part of their career Are physically fit women much less likely to suffer from dementia? According to a medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, it was seen that women with high physical fitness even at their middle age were 90% less vulnerable to developing dementia even after reaching their old age as compared to women who are moderately fit. The result of this study was a result of the measurement of cardiovascular fitness based on a workout test among women. It was seen that when women who are highly fit developed dementia, they incurred the disease at least 11 years later than women who are fit on a moderate level. They might develop at the age of 90 rather than the age of 79. These findings are interesting as it is indeed possible that enhancing the cardiovascular fitness of people during their middle age could delay their vulnerability for dementia. However, this study doesn’t reveal effect and cause between dementia and cardiovascular fitness; it just shows an association or a link. There is much more research that is needed to check if enhanced fitness could have a positive impact on development of dementia. For this study, 195 women within an average age of 50 were taken on a bicycle test until they were severely exhausted. Soon after, their cardiovascular capacity was measured. 103 watts of peak workload was measured for the women. There were a total of 40 women who could achieve the criteria for high level of fitness, around 93 women occupied with category of ‘medium fitness’ and 60 women were included in the ‘low fitness’ category. There were also some who had to stop their exercise tests in the midway due to chest pain, high blood pressure or other heart issues. Over the span of next 45 years, these women were tested for dementia 6 times. During this time period, 45% of them developed dementia, 5% of the highly fit ones got the disease as against 30% of the moderately fit women and 31% of low fitness women. Henceforth, it was proved that the highly fit women were 90% less likely to develop this degenerative disease as against the moderately fit women. Avert dementia â€" Strategies and lifestyle changes women should adopt One in 15 people above the age of 65 in the UK will develop this brain disease and though there is no such cure, evidence shows that there are many ways in which you can protect yourself against it. Let’s take a look at the few lifestyle changes that you should follow in order to make sure dementia doesn’t trigger you. #1: Keep a watch on your weight If you take into account few of the biggest risk factors that cause dementia, then that is diabetes and obesity during the mid-life which can aggravate the chances of developing dementia at a later stage of life. In fact, there have been links which found increased cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and the increased risk of suffering from dementia. However, these links can’t be concluded. So, being a responsible woman, if you monitor your cardiovascular health and weight since the time you reach your 40s, this could reduce the possibility of developing the disease called dementia. #2: Quit smoking With the large numbers of anti-smoking campaigns that are being started by federal authorities, everyone is pretty aware of the fact that there are long-term impacts of heavy smoking on your brain. Scientists found out that smoking could boost the risk of cognitive decline during old age and there was one study which showed that the people aged between 40 and 50 who smoked more than 2 packs of cigarette doubled their risk of suffering from dementia at the latter half of their lives. So, you need to quit smoking once and for all if you want to stay away from dementia. #3: Go for cognitive training People who have more years of university and school education will have a lower risk of dementia and there is enough evidence that there are possibilities of reducing the risk of dementia by trying to do new things as you gradually get older. You may take up new hobbies, learn new languages or other skills and participate on regular intellectual activity like crossword puzzles as they have neuro-protective effects on human brain. #4: Stay as active as possible There are several studies which have shown that rigorous physical activity and brisk walking can play a vital role in preserving your faculties in your later life. It is especially vital for the seniors to remain active and there are studies which find that the older people who continued with a regular program of exercise found their cognitive functioning abilities to improve. Nevertheless, the younger generation should avert sports which are related to causing head traumas like football or even boxing. Even traumas which are initially not so serious can lead to few forms of dementia. #5: Follow the Mediterranean diet Although the scientists are still not very clear on the way in which vitamins, nutrients and food groups have an impact on aggravating dementia, yet there are many studies which recommend people to follow a Mediterranean diet. If you don’t know what this diet form comprises of, it is small amounts of meat, more focus on fruits, whole grains, fish, vegetables, olive oil and nuts. All these suggest that it is possible to diminish the risk of dementia by preventing blood pressure from rising above the normal level. #6: Maintain a social life If you can maintain a socially active life as you grow older like volunteering for local community events or joining clubs, this is seen to have a protective impact against dementia. Studies also reveal that the individuals that have a really big social network during their old age have much better and advanced cognitive functions and reduced risk of decline of their mental abilities. #7: Maintain normal sleep patterns Scientists have linked sleep disturbances like insomnia with heightened risk of cognitive decline later on in life. If you take steps to deal with any kind of sleep issues, this could possibly reduce the chances of suffering from dementia. Nevertheless, scientists still don’t know how disturbed sleep patterns could relate to the condition of dementia. But if you suffer from it, make it a point to bring about few lifestyle changes. Finding in-home care services â€" What steps to take As long as in-home care services are concerned, there are wide array of services that are offered at home instead of a hospital or in a care facility. This type of care lets the person with dementia to remain in his own home and this can be of great benefit to the caregivers. Different kinds of in-home services All in-home services aren’t the same and while some offer medical help, some others offer help with regular living. Here are some common types of in-home services: Companion services: They help with initiating recreational activities, supervising and visiting the patient Homemaker services: They help with shopping, housekeeping or preparation of meals Personal care services: They help with dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, personal care and for exercising Skilled care services: They help you with injections, wound care, physical care and other medical requirements. A licensed health professional is assigned with this task Locating the best in-home services If you wish to find out the perfect in-home care facility, you may begin with these resources. Check them out. Consult with your doctor: The main doctor who is offering care for the person who is suffering from dementia is one of the best places to start. Make sure you ask for the suggestions from the health care providers who have got experience in taking care of people who are suffering from dementia. Use an online tool: When you’re searching for the home health agencies in your area, you can also check with an online tool. Medicare offers an effective online tool called Home Health Compare. Call your local Alzheimer’s association: You may also get in touch with the Alzheimer’s Association in your locality as they are the best place to give you referrals. But for that, you have to find out the local chapter. Community Resource Finder can be used: One more place to search for in-home care services is by utilizing the online Community Resource Finder. Mindfulness and Personal Branding Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Mindfulness and Personal Branding Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career If I asked you, Are you actively building your personal brand? youd probably immediately respond with an enthusiastic Yes, of course! However, what would happen if I asked you, What have you done today to build your personal brand? You might pause before answering. After a moment, you might respond that youre going to do some branding later in the afternoon, or tonight, after everyone in your household has gone to bed. And, thats the problem! If youre not actively and continuously involved building your brand throughout your day, you may be missing important opportunities to advance your career. Or, even worse, your behavior may be undermining the personal brand youre trying to build! What is mindful? One of the best definitions of mindfulness was provided by Peter Sterlacci in his recent post, 4 Personal Brand Attributes That Transcend Cultures. In Peters words: “Mindful” personal brands stay in the moment and actually pull us into this moment with them. They embrace the value of silence and reflection. They focus on those around them and not on themselves. Personal brands are always on trial Consistency and eternal vigilance are the hallmarks of a strong personal brand. Your clients, coworkers, and friends are constantly evaluating your personal brand. Your words, actions, and demeanor are always either contributing to your personal brand or undermining it. Rating your own personal branding behavior Here are some questions to ask yourself about the consistency of your personal branding success strategies. Pausing before responding.  Do you always take the time to consider how your words or action may be interpreted by others before reacting or responding? Or, do you shoot first and aim later? Ill-considered responses can do lasting harm to your personal brand. A slight pause before responding, however, helps avoid problems and communicates that you value your client or co-worker enough to carefully respond. Listening to your words. Do you carefully listen to your words and judge the image theyre projecting? The words you use should reinforce your expertise and strengthen the professionalism and trust value of the brand youre building. Imprecise language, inappropriate humor,   or a condescending tone can undermine your expertise. Appearance. Is your attire and grooming appropriate for the situation? Taking the time to project a professional image, and monitoring your posture and facial expressions can reinforce the image you want to project. Environment. Is your work area clutter-free and neatly organized?   A cluttered desk or cubicle can project a disorganized mind. Likewise, too many revealing partying photographs or vacation shots can communicate youd rather be elsewhere. Writing and editing. Do you take the time to review the accuracy, conciseness, and grammatical correctness of everything you write, even routine emails and responses? Do you double-check your emails for correctly-spelled industry terms and proper nouns? If your morning emails were reviewed a year from now, would they project an accurate image of your expertise and accomplishments? Punctuality. Do you strive to always be on time and always meet your deadlines? Its never appropriate to be fashionably late at meetings; on-time arrival is expected at informal meetings as well as scheduled events. Punctuality also involves respecting others time by keeping your contributions at meetings and brainstorming sessions as focused and concise as possible. Priorities. Most important, Is the way youre spending your time aligned with both your current and long-range objectives? Are you satisfying your immediate objectives and responsibilities, as well as investing time in your long-range brand building, as described in my recent ? Personal brand building cant be put off until later A sound personal branding strategy never begins, because it never ends! Success is based on all of your daily behaviors and all of your interactions with clients, prospects, and co-workers. Its what you write, what you say, and how you look. The best way to build a strong personal brand is to be mindful throughout your day, always looking for ways to reinforce the image you want others to associate with you. Seven Tricks for Great Job Search or Networking E-mails

Seven Tricks for Great Job Search or Networking E-mails Seven Tricks for Great Job Search or Networking Emails E-mail is the primary method of communication for job searching and networking, in general. Your e-mails should stand out because they are one of the better written ones. Inboxes are filled with crappy ones, too. Don’t be crappy. Here’s how: “The Law of Threes.” Say no more than 3 things in your email, then close it with your commitment to a next step. This will not only prevent you from rambling, but it will help the recipient to grasp your main points quickly. Send your email to yourself first. There is no better way to wear the shoes of your recipient than to send the email to yourself first. Open it, read it aloud to catch mistakes, and print it to see how it looks as a paper document. I guarantee you WILL find things to edit. Count the number of times you use variations of “I” versus “You.” Remember, this job search is not about you. This communication, whether it is an application, a networking e-mail, or a follow-up, is all about them and how you believe you are the best candidate and employee for them. Write in Microsoft Word then copy to email. Write your business letter in Microsoft Word then copy and paste that letter into your email body. This accomplishes two things: it will look nicer and you can save a copy of your letter in your documents folder. Proofread, proofread, and proofread again. Check for proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and typing errors. All recruiters and hiring managers continue to be amazed at the amount of typos, missing commas, and run-on sentences. How should you proofread? Read the email to yourself out loud. Send it to a friend or family member to proof for you. Read it from the bottom up. Correct all words and phrases underlined by the red, blue, and green squiggles that Microsoft generates for you. When following up, attach the old message(s). So often, when I receive a follow-up to a job inquiry, I get a fresh email from the candidate. “Ms. Manciagli, I sent you my résumé two weeks ago and I am writing to follow up.” Résumé? Always make it easy for the recipient to engage! Send your follow-up as a forward of the previous email AND reattach any previously submitted attachments, such as your cover letter and résumé. Bullet points are king. Very few people like to pour through long, wordy emails. In the main body of your email, use bullets to outline your key points. The opening and closing sentences should be full sentences, but the core can be bullet points. Remember to take your time, proof your messages well, and always err on the formal side.

Job search horror stories -

Job search horror stories - In honor of Halloween week, I thought it would be fun to commiserate and share some job search horror stories! The goal is to share tales from job seekers (so you know youre not alone) AND from hiring managers, so job seekers can learn what things might NOT work. So, welcome to Horror Story Week on Keppie Careers! I appreciate my Twitter friends for helping to pass the word that I am looking for stories, and for passing along some ideas for my series. Thanks also to Peter Shankman for HARO Help A Reporter Out, for help finding additional sources! (Its not too late to share your story! Send it to me: miriam(at)keppiecareers(dot)com.) I guess that I wasnt too surprised to learn that some of these horror stories may have had different endings had the job seeker taken a different approach. NOT that this excused rude behavior on the part of the hiring manager, but it is important to learn something from these stories Todd shared this story: So, this so-called executive recruiter sends me a questionnaire (10 pages BTW) and says complete it and schedule an interview. Well, in full disclosure, I only completed half, but went ahead and scheduled the meeting. After all, I was an executive and my resume was what I wanted to talk about. So, while waiting in the lobby of this firm, some guy walks out to greet me. Hes wearing some ridiculous looking suit with tennis shoes and showing off a shiny keychain that says Hyundai and acts like hes doing me a favor by taking the time to meet with me. The guy walks me to some conference room, throws the half-complete questionnaire on the table and begins to yell at meliterally. He proceeds to tell me that Im a loser and have no future. I couldnt believe it! So, I stood up and said I made a mistake. ThenTHENhe calls me an a-hole as I walked out. All I said was, Back at ya! Following this, eh emepisode, I landed a job as an executive for an online brokerage firm in Texas. I always wanted to call the guy and rub it in, but why stoop to that level. So, what can we learn here? Clearly, Todd wasnt very interested in this job! The fact is, if he was not willing to fill out the application (no matter how long), he should not have bothered to apply! As a job seeker, it is your responsibility to follow directions regarding the application if you want the job! On the other hand, if you see what seems like a ridiculous application process, consider it a red flag. Maybe this company has policies and proceedures that are not likely to mesh with your preferred way of doing things. Evaluate it and decide NOT to apply! Even if you are desperate for a job, you know, deep down, you are unlikely to be happy working for a place that sets up what you consider to be an absurd hiring process. In this case, obviously, the hiring manager was a bit off. Its never appropriate to yell and swear at an applicant, and you have to assume an employee would receive the same treatment. So, it was lucky for Todd that things worked out the way they did! What do you think? Share your comments below! - I can help with every part of your job hunt! Need a great resume?
